Edinburg to Change Policy for Employees following CBD Legalization

EDINBURG – The city of Edinburg says it’s making changes so employees can use cannabidiol products.

The state recently moved to allow CBD products after the federal government legalized them.

Rey Fuentes, co-owner of Mid Valley Health and Wellness, says CBD products have helped him for years.

He says they try out products from a range of manufacturers and give customers their best suggestions.

"A lot of our products and most of them we do keep lab reports on them. They do show 0% or very little traces of THC. We try to look for the products that are closest to zero as possible," says Fuentes.

Earlier this year, the city of Edinburg needed to know what to tell their police officers to do if they encountered CBD products.

The legislature decided to make CBD products legal, if they contain less than .3% THC.

"According to our current policies, we would have to terminate our employee. What we want to do is revise our HR policies to allow for employees to disclose that they are taking these products, so they're not in danger of being terminated," explained city attorney, Omar Ochoa.

Ochoa says they're still working out the exact language and precisely how they'll measure the amount of THC in someone's system.

The new law takes effect Sept. 1; Edinburg is moving ahead now.
