RIO GRANDE CITY – Families are left not knowing where to take their children after a Texas head start program shut down.

Teachers tell CHANNEL 5 NEWS they’re also out of a job.

Teaching and Mentoring Communities programs helped low-income families and those who are migrant workers.

In September 2017, they were given a notice of termination after a review. An investigation later found the organization was misusing federal funds.

The Zarate family says they want to know what’s going to happen next.

Congressman Henry Cuellar says the federal government’s Community Development Institute will take over the program.

Officials say Rio Grande Valley parents and staff can call the following number to obtain more information:

Parents: 844-563-7249

Staff: 844-563-7261

For those in the Zapata and Starr counties head start programs:

Parents: 855-294-5718

Staff: 844-563-7259
