ELSA – Firework stands across the Rio Grande Valley are on high alert.

Police say they are targets for thieves looking to make a quick buck; some employees are even carrying a hammer or an old bat to stay safe.

One firework stand owner tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS about the dangers he faces in this business.

KRGV’s John Paul Barajas spoke with Precinct 5 Deputy Constable Jesse Vega about the precautions these workers should take.

He says people who seem suspicious should not be confronted directly.

"You can always call the communications. The dispatch office and just let them know you’re requesting extra patrols around the area,” says Precinct 5 Deputy Jesse Vega.
