WESLACO - Week seven was the opening weekend of district games for the Valley's smaller school enrollments.  By contrast, district races were starting to take shape in the 6A and 5A battles to capture the flag.  McAllen Memorial's win in the "Game of the Week" over McAllen has left the Mustangs as the only unbeaten team in 30-6A.  Vela knocked off PSJA Southwest to join PSJA in first place in 31-6A.  Lower Valley 6A games saw San Benito and Harlingen both win, and continue to point to the final week of the regular season.  Their match-up in the annual "Battle of the Arroyo" could decide this year's champion in 32-6A.

Mission Veterans took charge in 31-5A with a win over Nixon.  Sharyland is the only other unbeaten team in the district.  The Rattlers sit one-half game back in the standings after dispatching Cigarroa.  Nixon and Rio Grande City each have a district loss after losing on Friday.  Lopez and Brownsville Veterans both won Thursday, and share the 32-5A lead ahead of next Saturday's showdown in Brownsville.

The newest edition of Dave's Dozen will have the latest evaluation of top teams in the Rio Grande Valley.  That ranking comes out Monday night on CHANNEL 5 NEWS at 10.
