WESLACO – The Rio Grande Valley once again honored the life of Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Noe Hernandez.

America's Last Patrol held a flag raising ceremony at his parents’ home in Weslaco Monday afternoon.

"He was the most beautiful soul to ever live. My husband was the most selfless person and beautiful person I have ever known," Dora Hernandez, Hernandez’s widow, said.

His wife said she's overwhelmed with the support everyone has given her and her family.

"I'm a local from here from Weslaco. I grew up here, but I've been gone seven years following my husband around the world so I wasn't expecting it,” she said.

The veteran organization hosts these events to let the families known they are looking out for them.

"As soon as we found out, we've been here for the family whatever they need," Ricardo Pena, commander of America’s last Patrol, said.

Pena told CHANNEL 5 NEWS they try to hold these ceremonies for all fallen Valley service members.

Though her husband may be gone, Dora Hernandez said his legacy lives on.

“It felt great seeing the support once again. It's just every time something happens, honoring my husband, the community just shows up and shows us once again and again that they are behind us 100 percent. And that's amazing,” she said.

Hernandez was among seven sailors who died on the U.S.S. Fitzgerald after a cargo ship collided with the vessel near Japan.
