HOUSTON (AP) - Christina Morales has defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Noriega in the runoff for the vacant state House District 145 seat that represents parts of downtown and southeastern Houston.

Morales, who is president of a Houston funeral home, will succeed Democrat Carol Alvarado, who has been elected to the Texas Senate.

In the unofficial final count, she garnered almost 61 percent of the vote to 39 percent for Noriega, a former Houston city council member.
