LA JOYA – Elias Gutierrez’s presence on the field is key to Juarez-Lincoln’s success.

“Everybody looks up to Elias,” said Juarez-Lincoln head coach Tomas Garcia. “Whether he’s on offense or defense, our kids understand the exceptional athlete that is he. They understand that he’s a leader by motivating you and he’s a leader on the field.”

In their week one victory over PSJA Memorial, Gutierrez snagged three interceptions. In week two against Rio Hondo, the senior returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and scored another on offense in the Huskies’ comeback win over the Bobcats.

“I’m on the field for the whole game but I mean it’s for the team,” said Gutierrez. “If we need help on anything and I can do that, then I’ll do it for the team.”

Gutierrez is used to playing multiple roles on and off the field. As a freshman, he missed practice regularly to take care of his younger brother.

“He was very young at the time and my parents were never home because they were always working and my brothers were at school,” said Gutierrez. “I was the only one left to take care of him. I had to do what I had to do for my family.”

“Here at Juarez, we have some situations at home,” said Garcia. “We just got to work with the kids.”

Gutierrez no longer misses out on practice. Coach Garcia says the senior star has a good chance of becoming the first player under his guidance at Juarez-Lincoln to earn a football scholarship.
