Hanna Back in Playoff Mix
BROWNSVILLE – To say the Golden Eagles are hungry for the playoffs would be an understatement. Hanna hasn’t made it to the postseason since 2009.
“We came up short a couple of times but our guys are ready,” said senior running back and defensive back Matthew Garcia.
After a 1-2 start, the Eagles are soaring in district play. Friday night, Hanna improved to 4-0 in district 32-6A. That puts them in a tie with San Benito for first place.
“The key is making sure that you maintain your focus and are able to continue to try and get better and not over confident,” said head coach Mark Guess.
“We just have to work hard with the same mindset,” said sophomore quarterback Victor Campos. “We can’t go into a game thinking we’re going to come in and we’re going to beat them now.”
At 6-1 Hanna has already doubled their win total from last season. Not only is a playoff berth within reach. The Eagles are in the mix for their first district title since 2009.
“Every year is different,” said Garcia. “You don’t know who’s going to come out on top. It’s very hard to say who’s going to finish it off with the district title.”
“It’s going to be a buzz saw and you have to be ready to play because everybody in this league can play,” said Guess. “I just think if we can continue to get better week in and week out, then you know we will be making some noise at the end.”
