HIDALGO – Extra security is being added to a Rio Grande Valley school district.

Hidalgo ISD will begin using a new application on staff phones as an alternative to arming teachers.

A notification application called Texas Guardians was created to aid in the event of an active shooter.

“Within seconds after the active shooter exercise started, he had passed out 13 phones – 10 to teachers three to our custodians – and the active shooter was found immediately because that phone was giving the coordinates of the active shooter throughout our buildings,” says Hidalgo ISD Superintendent Xavier Salinas.

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas spoke with the creator to learn more about this app.
