MCALLEN – Avoiding long lines to purchasing a vehicle registration sticker on social media, think again.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned buying vehicle registration stickers on social media may land you in hot water.

Searching for world news and keeping in contact with friends; Sissy Cox said that’s what she loves most about Facebook.

She told CHANNEL 5 NEWS every so often she even looks for a good deal on the marketplace. Last week, she found an ad for vehicle registration stickers.

“It makes me mad because I pay my dues to the state and I believe everyone else should,” Cox explained.

Cox said she found several similar ads. Some have since been removed.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS called one of the lone survivors. That number was disconnected, so we contacted the seller through the marketplace. She denied selling stickers. So we asked why her ad said the opposite. She gave no response.

“No. That is not legal. The only place that you can purchase a registration sticker is in a county office or a deputy of a county,” Jeremiah Kuntz said.

Kuntz is the director of the vehicle titles and registration division at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

He told CHANNEL 5 NEWS an illegal sale of a vehicle registration sticker is a third-degree felony. He explained if you purchase the sticker you’re in trouble too.

“It’s a Class C misdemeanor for someone to process them and use it,” Kuntz said.

Kuntz told CHANNEL 5 NEWS that punishment becomes a Class B misdemeanor for repeat offenders.

He adds the investigations are handled by local law enforcement. Cox says she sticks to getting her registration stickers the legal way.

Kuntz said if you have knowledge of an illegal sale of a vehicle registration sticker you can either report it to local law enforcement or by filing a complaint on the DMV’s website.
