BROWNSVILLE – Hundreds of immigrants released from federal custody are finding refuge at a Brownsville Settlement House.

The Good Neighbor Settlement House in downtown Brownsville provides three meals and a daytime shelter for the city's homeless and needy.

They've now opened their doors to hundreds of women and children being released from U.S. Border Patrol custody.

Executive Director Jack White says they've been getting three bus load drop-offs from Border Patrol per day.

"We work collaboratively with the city staff to get their travel plans, bus passes or airline tickets, help them with showering, or clothes in some cases, and backpacks for the trip," says White.

A Honduran woman seeking asylum says she is glad she's at the settlement house and her time in Border Patrol custody wasn't always pleasant.

"It's not a good time, they put you in a cold room and some agents act very educated and some don't. There were some people that didn't even want to touch us," she says.

White says although this isn't the shelter's original mission, they are adapting to the community’s needs.
