SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – The city of South Padre Island is issuing a voluntary evacuation for RVs ahead of tropical depression Harvey.

While some people have packed up and left Isla Blanca Park there are still a good number of those who are choosing to stay behind and brace what's to come.

"We're going to stay here and enjoy the weather, until it gets pretty bad," Carlos Galvan who is staying at the park in his RV.

Galvan is a longtime summer resident of Isla Blanca Park.

"From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day and we were hoping to stay a little longer this year," said Galvan.

He is one of the many people who spent the day preparing instead of leaving the island.

"We're tying down. We're going to get all the chairs down and under the table and make sure we bring in anything that's loose, tie them down. That's about it nothing else," said Galvan.

This isn't the first time Galvan has dealt with something brewing in the Gulf of Mexico; he was also staying at Isla Blanca Park during Hurricane Dolly.

"It was a mandatory evacuation back then, we stayed at my house across the bridge in Port Isabel, we endured the hurricane there," said Galvan as he recalled that year.

Galvan and others CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke with said, for Harvey they plan to stay at the park unless an evacuation becomes mandatory.

"We were scheduled to leave on Sunday but if we are told to leave then we'll leave," said Edna Montez who is also staying at the park in a RV.

Both Galvan and Montez said if things do change they are ready to go at a moment’s notice.

As of Wednesday, the beaches at Isla Blanca County Park, and Andy Bowie Park will remain open until further notice.

Starting Thursday morning, Cameron County is closing beach access 3, 4, 5, 6 and Boca Chica Beach because of the possible high tides Harvey will cause. They will be closed to foot and vehicle traffic.
