EDINBURG – The jury that will decide the fate of a former priest accused of the 1960 murder of a McAllen teacher has now been chosen.

John Bernanrd Feit is accused of beating and suffocating 25-year-old Irene Garza to death.

She was last seen going to confession at McAllen’s Sacred Heart Church Easter weekend of that year. Days after she was first reported missing, Garza’s body was found in a canal.

Investigators said decades later, they finally pieced together enough evidence to arrest Feit in connection with her death.

The potential jurors were questioned by both the defense and prosecutors.

The opening of the trial is set for Thursday morning.
