LOS INDIOS – Over $5 million in state grants were awarded to law enforcement agencies, including two small police departments in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Department of Public Safety Local Border Security Grant Program seeks for grantees to combat criminal activity along the border.

Rio Grande City Police Assistant Chief Jose Solis says their officers have accomplished a lot with similar grants. For almost 10 years, it’s helped them fill the gaps.

Los Indios police are made up of two full-time officers, aside from the chief and several volunteer officers.

The police chief says they look forward to applying for other grants next year to hire more officers.
