WESLACO – Local veterans with disabilities could see an increase in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs checks starting next year.

KRGV’s Frank McCaffrey spoke to the VA about the matter.

The VA says veterans who receive disability compensation will notice a change in their rates starting Jan. 1.

"As you get older, the injuries, they hurt more and more," says Weslaco veteran Jose Salazar.

Hidalgo County Veterans Service officer Felix Rodriguez says the VA is increasing the amount of disability by 2.8 percent.

“This increase expresses in a tangible way our nation’s gratitude for the sacrifices made by our service-disabled wartime veterans,” says John Limpose, director of the Waco VA Regional Office.

Salazar says he is happy to hear about the increase and plans to contact the Hidalgo Veterans Service Office in the coming days.
