WESLACO – It’s the season for online shopping. Shoppers continue to flock to online deals on the internet making it one of the busiest times for online shopping.

The United Postal Service alone says they're going to ship about 750 million packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

But with all of the packages being shipped it's also the season for package thieves.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS went to a local UPS Store and spoke to a couple of people. They were shipping some packages Friday, but they're not too worried about receiving them.

In the United States, 11 million people have had a package stolen from them in the last year. The victims often spend close to $200 to replace the stolen items.

"It's the busiest time of year. We actually do about double our normal daily volume this time of year," said UPS Public Relations Manager Matthew O’Connor.

He says because there are so many packages going out, there are also so many being messed with, but UPS, along with other mail carriers, are trying to do their part with trying to stop those thefts.

"UPS delivers are trained to be aware of their surroundings when they're making their deliveries,” O'Connor said.

Drivers are trained to hide packages in places not visible from the street along with other techniques.

O'Connor can't explain to us. He says it comes down to every houses unique living situation when it comes to ordering and receiving a package from a mail carrier.

He says if you live in a high traffic area where the UPS deliverer can't leave your package concealed, there is a higher probability of that package getting stolen.

You can also track your package through UPS and different mail carriers to know when your package is being dropped off.

"You can also forward it to your neighbor or your office," noted O’Connor.

Someone receiving a package can also leave delivery instructions for the carrier or even pick it up at a nearby UPS location.
