ALTON – A man is behind bars in Alton after police said he held a store employee hostage while threatening police.

It happened around noon on Tuesday at the Stripes store near Mile 5 and La Homa Road.

Police said a man stole beer at the store earlier in the day and came back later. The man claimed he had a gun and ordered customers out of the store.

He wouldn’t allow the cashier to leave.

Police went in with bulletproof shields and a patrol dog. The man was arrested before anyone was hurt.

Police said the man had a beer bottle in the waist of his pants covered by shirt. There was no gun.

The man is expected to be charged Wednesday.
