Man Dies in Edinburg Police Custody

UPDATE (6/19): The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation after a man died in Edinburg police custody.

Authorities identified the man to be 30-year-old Christopher Reyes. Police said officers responded to a call from a family member Sunday afternoon on Greenbriar Drive.

Reyes was taken into custody and taken to a local hospital.

Sheriff’s investigators said they have spoken to witnesses and secured video recordings from body cameras and surveillance video from the apartment complex.

Deputies ask if anyone knows information to call Hidalgo County Crime Stoppers at 668-TIPS.

EDINBURG - A man died while in police custody Sunday afternoon according to Edinburg Police. 

Assistant Chief Oscar Treviño tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS a family member called authorities to Greenbriar Dr. about a male family member.

When police arrived the unidentified man was combative towards officers, according to Treviño. He was placed into police custody.

Investigators believe the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 

While the man was in custody he passed out and died, according to Treviño. 

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department was called in to investigate the death in custody, as stand protocol dictates.
