MCALLEN – More Rio Grande Valley police departments are utilizing speed detector trailers.

The McAllen Police Department announced they will be the newest department to use the tool.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS wanted to find out if these trailers really help slow drivers down.

The Weslaco Police Department purchased their speed detector trailers six months ago. Weslaco Police Sgt. Bernie Garza explained the trailer’s intent is to remind the public to follow the speed limit.

“You don’t know when the officer is going to be out there enforcing the traffic as well. We might have it out there for two to three days, they might be out the first day. We have it out there,” he said.

Garza said the trailers cost the department around $6,000.

The devices were purchased by drug seizure funds.
