MCALLEN – The Mustangs didn’t get out to the best start this season. They lost to Hanna, then turned their luck around in week two thanks to Sean Skaugen.

The McAllen Memorial senior led the Mustangs until recently, when he suffered a injury.

“I sustained a stress fracture in my back,” said Skaugen. “In my spine.”

The team has called upon the next man up, junior Joseph Lara.

“It was just a thing that happened all of a sudden,” said Lara. “I just stepped up and said yes.”

“I agree with the decision, he’s going to do great,” said Skaugen. “He’s a great athlete.”

Although Lara is afresh to starting under the Friday night lights, head coach Bill Littleton has faith he can get the job done.

“Joseph has some big shoes to full, but Joseph has come in and done a great job filling in for him,” said Littleton. “We couldn’t be more proud of what Joe has brought to the table for us.”

In Lara’s debut, the team lost to PSJA, but the new quarterback redeemed himself this past Friday against McAllen.

“He has always been a kid when the lights come on, he stepped up to the plate,” said Littleton.

Lara and the Mustangs face Juarez-Lincoln Thursday in La Joya.
