MISSION – Staff and patrons at a Mission library were reminded of a recurring problem when a leak emerged Tuesday from the ceiling.

Speer Memorial Library staff laid out plastic containers to protect the carpet and covered computer stations and a bookshelf that couldn’t be easily moved with a tarp.

"It's been like that for a while," said patron Felix Martinez.

Library Director Mayra Rocha tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS it’s not the first leak they’ve dealt with. She says up until now, it hasn't damaged any inventory.

“It’s such a big building. It does take a quite a bit of money but it’s something that’s in the works already,” she says.

Rocha explains subsequent patchwork on the roof by city maintenance workers has helped. The next step will be to call in an order again, but this time she hopes there’s a long-term fix.

"We usually wait until the conditions are dry and that it's safe for the employees to go up, and we evaluate the situation,” she says.

Rocha says the city of Mission has spoken to contractors to see how much it will cost. However, they will still have to work on getting the money to have the issue solved once and for all.

We spoke to Mission City Manager Martin Garza about the leak. He says he’s behind finishing a long-term repair on the library.

He adds right now, the city’s in the stage of working on evaluating what needs to get done. Once they have that information, they’ll be able to authorize a long-term repair.
