MISSION – The National Butterfly Center noticed construction and destruction on their land Thursday. The executive director claims administrators were not notified.

The North American Butterfly Association started acquiring land in Mission in 2002.

Executive director, Marianna Trevino-Wright considers the center home. She said she felt that on Thursday morning, her home suffered damage and she wasn’t given a chance to defend it.

The center owns more than 100 acres. She had gone out to the 70 acres behind the center for welfare check of the land.

Trevino-Wright said what she found was not wildlife. She found trees ripped from the ground and construction crews widening a road that leads to the Rio Grande River.

“I don’t know who brought the surveyors out here. You can also see the X’s where they have been doing the core sampling of the levee wall. They did some kind of sampling on our property and put an X there. I don’t know what they plan here,” said Trevino-Wright.

Less than five percent of Texas’ natural habitat for native wildlife remains.

Trevino-Wright wants answers. She wants a meeting with the person who brought the construction equipment onto the non-profit’s land.

After contacting Customs and Border Patrol spokesman, Rod Kise, he sent CHANNEL 5 NEWS a statement, “Once the allegations are substantiated, you would need to reach out to the appropriate agency.”

It is unclear if the work at the site is part of the proposed fiscal year 2017 construction or for the 2018 proposed levee wall – or neither.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS will let you know as soon as that information is available.
