RAYMONDVILLE – A Rio Grande Valley sheriff says a new policy will help curb funding issues needed to run the jail.

The Sandra Bland Act, which was enacted September 1, 2017, requires evaluations for every individual.

Officials had to hire a psychiatrist, a consular and two psychologists in order to meet the state’s requirement, which took a toll on funding.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio says officials have agreed to terms with La Jarra Ranch to house several mentally ill inmates.

“They will assist this individual and try to get them on the Social Security,” Lucio explains.

KRGV’s Trason Bragg explains how this new policy will not only help to better allocate funds, but also help mentally ill inmates to receive the help they need.
