Organization Demands Solutions For Immigration Surge
WESLACO - The surge of immigrants traveling to the southern border has the nation wanting solutions from Congress to create change.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to a group working to change opinions about how to fix the issue across Texas and the country.
Ira Mehlman is the Media Director for the Federation for America Immigration Reform, an organization that advocates reducing the number of people who immigrate to the U.S. illegally.
Mehlman says she believes the government needs to demand tougher laws on other countries like Mexico.
“We have to treat this as a political and economic crisis around the world," she says.
The city of Laredo Mayor, Pete Saenz, says there is more that can be done.
He says his city’s economy thrives due to immigration.
Saenz says he wants Congress to take a more comprehensive approach to immigration and asylum reform.
