EDINBURG – One of the world’s pioneers in livestock handling was in the Rio Grande Valley Thursday as part of Team Mario’s 2017 Autism Conference.

Dr. Temple Grandin visited the Edinburg livestock auction house where she spoke to hundreds of Valley FFA students about humane treatment of livestock and about how her autism has helped her understand animal behavior.

Her message was also live-streamed to nearby Edinburg North High School where more students could learn from her expertise.

“Students get interested in careers they get exposed to,” she said. “One of the big problems in education in a lot of states, is they’ve taken out all of the hands-on – worst thing they possibly could do because some students aren’t getting exposed to enough career options.”

Grandin said she became interested in livestock when she started visiting her aunt’s ranch.
