MCALLEN – Some local police departments, as well as a respite center, are on standby as the migrant caravan pushes north.

Sister Norma Pimentel with Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS she’s been working with Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

She says they’re in need of donations for food, water and clothing in order to help families who may be stranded at the border.

KRGV’s Taylor Winkel reached out to police departments throughout the Valley.

"We are going to be hopefully having more units out there on the road, also units protecting our citizens,” says Chief Jose De La Rosa.

Several others say they’ve had meetings pertaining to the migrant caravan and are discussing the situation with Border Patrol.
