WESLACO – The Weslaco Police Department is on the lookout for a mailbox thief.

The suspect was caught driving up to the Keystone Apartments off Business 83 early Monday morning.

As of Thursday, it’s unclear what the suspect got away with but police do know the man took several packaged items from over 50 mailboxes.

Police say the suspect tore through not only one, but two master boxes giving him access to the entire grid of mailboxes.

Only a mail carrier has a key to access that master box. Since the man didn't have to go bin by bin, he quickly got away with several items.

One of the tenants, Veronica Daniel, was among the targeted mailboxes. Daniel says she’s an avid online shopper so she isn’t sure if the thief got away with an item she was expecting.

“It was kind of a shock because the day before I was expecting my phone. I’m glad that I got my phone on time but it could have been me,” she says.

Daniel says the incident changes the way she checks her mail from here on out.  She won't just grab it and go. Instead, she will review all her items to be sure nothing is missing.

The apartment complex property manager tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS this is the first time they’ve been targeted. The property manager plans to add cameras inside the mailroom or close it off so only residents have limited access.

According to law, mailboxes are considered federal property.

Locally, the Weslaco Police Department continues handling the criminal mischief charges on the damages left to the mailboxes. The postmaster general is also looking into what items were taken.

Police say it's unknown exactly how much or what the suspect got away with. Since it is income tax season, they believe the suspect was after personal information or checks in bulk.

The following is a description of the man police are looking for:

  • Hispanic male

  • Wearing dark clothing and black jacket

  • Short black hair with a bald spot

  • Seen driving a 4-door, GMC Yukon or possible Chevy Tahoe

If you have any information you can call the Weslaco Crime Stoppers at 956-968-8477.

According to a spokesperson with the post office, those affected will have to figure out what was taken from their box.
