WESLACO – New restrictions set forth in a memo will directly affect the process for those seeking asylum.

The memo was issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on July 11 with a statement which reads,

“If an asylum application is fatally flawed on one essential ground, then a USCIS officer need not examine the remaining elements for asylum.”

KRGV’s Valerie Gonzalez spoke with an immigration attorney to find out how this will impact the asylum process.

"Now with this change, if they come over, they probably are not going to see an immigration judge. They're going to be detained, and they're going to be removed," says Immigration Attorney Jaime Diez.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS looked into the factors that come into play when deciding on an asylum claim.
