WESLACO – Fake Social Security calls are using the government shutdown angle to retrieve personal information.

Local resident Veronica Galvan says a caller told her she needed to update her personal information due to a “wiped out” government database.

“Due to the government shutdown, my social security number was going to be terminated, as well as Medicare,”says Galvan.

Robert Obregon with the Better Business Bureau says these fake government callers are taking advantage of the consumer that’s being created through the government shutdown.

KRGV’s Sierra Pizarro reports federal agencies will not call residents, unless they are called first.
