WESLACO – A robbery suspect is in custody after a chase ended in two wrecks near Expressway 83 Wednesday afternoon.

Weslaco Police Spokesman Bernie Garza tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS they received a report about a carjacking incident on Mile 2 and 1/2 north of Weslaco.

He says Department of Public Safety troopers and Weslaco police encountered the suspect’s vehicle at the intersection of Midway Road and Business 83 soon after the call came in.

Garza explains the suspect sped off and later caused a crash at the intersection of Midway and Frontage roads.

No one was injured at the scene.

However, the suspect continued eastbound on Frontage Road and then tried to merge onto the expressway where he caused another crash.

Garza says the man was detained soon after he fled on foot.

Police are releasing few details about the suspect or the victims’ cars at this time.

The incident continues to be investigated.
