SAN CARLOS – With thousands of people suffering from diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley, one community works to keep themselves educated and fight against it.

The San Carlos Community Resource Center prides itself on helping its community with free programs available for all.

Resident Rosalinda Esquivel, a diabetic, went through a divorce years ago. She knew changes needed to happen.

“I’ve made a lot of changes. For starters, I start my day at 6 a.m. every day. I get myself ready for the day and that alone helps me feel better,” she said. “I come from a diabetic family and I saw the consequences that happen if you don’t take care of yourself.”

Esquivel said she witnessed the severe consequences associated with diabetes when growing up.

“I don’t want to have to get to the point where I have to take a high dosage of medicine, because in the long run it will do me more harm,” she said.

Esquivel said programs offered through the community resource center help keep herself active while serving others.

“So, I’m not only going from bed to the table. As a diabetic, I need to keep active one way or another,” she said. “I’m 55 years old, but every day you learn something new and it’s never too late to learn something. You can always learn something new.”

Esquivel said coming to the center also continues to educate her on her disease.

“What we’re trying to do is educate people so they can learn how to take care of themselves, and better their health before they are actually very sick,” she said.

Cristina Leal, community outreach specialist with La Union Del Pueblo Entero, hosts a class on diabetes awareness. She said trying to keep the community engaged is a part of fixing the issue.

“Low-income communities often do not – people do not have health insurance. They don’t get the preventative health care services that they need,” she said.

The community center offers a Zumba class every day, free of cost to the community. They also offer various programs, including diabetes awareness and preventative healthcare. The center is located at the 200 block of 86th Street in San Carlos.
