SAN JUAN - Two San Juan firefighters continue to recover from their injuries after the fire truck they were driving rolled over.

The incident happened Saturday around noon in the westbound lanes of Expressway 83. San Juan Fire Chief Tirso Garza said the investigation showed the cause was a driver and communication error.

Garza said two fire trucks were headed to an accident on the expressway. The crew on the fire truck that rolled over heard the accident was on top of the expressway and not on the frontage road.

“So he swerved - or not swerved, but tried to get on the ramp. But the concrete barriers were already there,” he said. “And what we’re piecing together, and thinking what happened was, he was already on top of that and he tried to come back onto the frontage.”

Garza said the loss of the fire truck will not hinder daily operations. He said the two firefighters are off for four days and could be cleared to go back to work soon.

The San Juan department is waiting on insurance adjusters to determine if the fire truck will be able to go back in service.
