Sheriff: Police dog killed trying to stop armed suspect
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Authorities in San Antonio say a police dog was shot and killed by a suspect who himself is now in critical condition after the shootout.
KSAT-TV reports that the suspect fled after being pulled over by police in Karnes City, Texas. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the suspect ditched his truck on a highway and began walking down the road, firing shots at officers.
Sheriff's deputies sent 5-year-old Chucky to stop the suspect. Salazar says Chucky bit the man, who fired several shots at the dog. Deputies and state troopers then fired at the man, taking him down.
Salazar says Chucky "went out doing what he was brought here to do ... to save lives."
