SPI Fire Dept. Announces Summer Junior Lifeguard Program
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – The South Padre Island Fire Department is looking for youngsters to participate in their Junior Lifeguard Program.
The department is inviting those between the ages of 10 to 16 to tryout.
They will be meeting at the SPI Fire Station on May 4 and 5; and May 18 and 19 at 10 a.m.
The fire station is located at 106 West Retama Street.
Participants are required to have an interest in the beach environment, must be able to swim two laps without stopping and be able to tread on water for up to seven minutes, depending on their age.
The South Padre Island fire chief believes the program is a great first step for those who are interested in becoming beach patrol lifeguards in the future.
The Junior Lifeguard Program will start June 3 and run until June 28.
Classes will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon.
The first 20 participants to pass the swim test will be accepted into the program.
