SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – Law enforcement officials are warning to take safety precautions when it comes to summer activities at South Padre Island.

R.C. Flores says he has seen incidents on Padre Boulevard involving not only distracted drivers, but pedestrians.

"There is pedestrians that are usually walking where they're supposed to but the ones you have to be aware about are the pedestrians that are walking where they're not supposed to be,” he says.

Flores says he has rented golf carts before and warns even when driven correctly, they can be dangerous.

Recent accidents on the island, including one hit-and-run involving a golf cart has South Padre Island officials stressing safety over summer break.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to South Padre Island Patrol Lieutenant Juan Herrera.

"First of all traffic is going to be an issue, it has been since the beginning of the summer and I'm sure it will continue until at least through July," says Herrera.

With more people on the island, Herrera says to stay aware of your surroundings and to travel in groups.
