SAN DIEGO (AP) - Meeting with Gerrit Cole and the pitcher's wife for the first time last week at the Fashion Island Hotel in Newport Beach, Brian Cashman tossed out a literary reference that prompted laughter. The New York Yankees general manager called the 29-year-old right-hander “my white whale." New York failed to get Cole in 2008 when the Yankees drafted him in the first round and again when Pittsburgh considered trade offers after the 2017 season. Cashman said New York hoped the third time would be the charm and it was when the Yankees offered a record $324 million, nine-year contract.
