WESLACO--The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting involving State Rep. Armando Martinez.

Sheriff's spokesperson J.P. Rodriguez said the sheriff's office believes Martinez was hit by a stray bullet that was fired in the air at about 3 a.m. on the 5400 of Sago in Weslaco.

Martinez is in stable condition.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke with witnesses in the area. They said the amount of gunshots heard during the night was concerning.

“You do get the occasional gunfire. You can tell the difference between the gun fire and the fireworks,” Armando Sanchez, resident of the area said. “Last night, it got to the point where it was bad, so I sent the kids inside while I finished up outside. And I went inside once I finished what I was doing.”

Rodriguez said the investigation is ongoing.

The sheriff's office wants the public to remember celebratory gunfire is very dangerous that can cause property damage and serious injury or death.
