Surprise at St. Joseph Academy
BROWNSVILLE – Hundreds of St. Joseph Academy students gathered for the school’s day of service, where they give back to the community.
Little did senior Marte Rodriguez know that he would be receiving a $20,000 scholarship from Foot Locker.
The valedictorian was surprised by the news.
“I just went online and started searching out for many scholarships and since I was involved in extra-curricular activities related to sports, I decided to apply for the scholarship,” said Rodriguez.
The multi-sport athlete never heard from the shoe store until today’s ceremony.
“It was pretty surprising,” said Rodriguez. “I didn’t expect all this. I thought it was just going to be a small e-mail or something, but it was a pretty big surprise. It was just shock. I couldn’t stop smiling.”
The scholarship will go towards his tuition at the University of Texas in Austin, where Rodriguez will study business.
“Marte is an exception student,” said St. Joseph Dean of Students Natasha Perez. “He has the highest GPA of any student here.”
13,000 kids nationwide applied for the scholarship.
Only 20 received it.
