NEAR EDINBURG – A man who caused a deadly crash in 2009 was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Fernando Guajardo Rodriguez is accused in the death of Jose Pablo Mata.

Officials said Mata was on his way to see his grandson perform at the now-defunct University of Texas-Pan American.

Department of Public Safety troopers said Rodriguez was drunk and had his headlights off when he slammed into Mata’s car head-on on Monte Cristo Road.

Mata died at the scene.

Officials could not find Rodriguez after the accident because they believe he had fled to Mexico.
