Suspect in Harlingen Fatal Hit-and-Run Arrested

UPDATE (9:30 PM): The man wanted in a deadly Harlingen hit-and-run is in custody.

The 31-year-old Harlingen man was arrested 600 miles away in Pecos Thursday afternoon. He was wanted on intoxication manslaughter charges.

Fifty-seven-year-old Natividad Chavez was struck while she crossed the street near the 1100 block of South 77 Sunshine Strip in Harlingen.

She later died at a local hospital due to her injuries.

Authorities released surveillance video of the suspect’s vehicle in the area of the crash. Investigators said evidence led them to his vehicle, which was left in the Rio Hondo area.

Harlingen police said the public’s tips led to his arrest. They are working with the Pecos Police Department to have the suspect extradited to Harlingen.

We are withholding the suspect’s name until he is arraigned.
