Suspected Smuggler Previously Arrested in Hidalgo Co.
UPDATE (12/16): U.S. Border Patrol said a suspected smuggler could have been found earlier.
Juan Fidel Velasquez-Alvarado was caught Monday due to the agency’s Se Busca initiative. The program asks for the public’s help to catch suspected smugglers.
It turns out Velazquez-Alvarado was taken into custody in June by Hidalgo County on drunk driving charges.
Border Patrol issued the following statement about the case:
“Our agency, due to the infancy of the program, failed to notify our law enforcement partners that we were looking for this specific individual to obtain information on his ties to smuggling organizations.”
SARITA – U.S. Border Patrol said a suspected smuggler is off the streets.
Juan Fidel Velazquez-Alvarado was arrested Monday. Officials said a citizen called San Juan police after they recognized his picture on a billboard at the Sarita checkpoint.
The campaign seeks the public’s help at finding suspected smugglers exploiting Rio Grande Valley communities.
