AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose by more than 1,200 in Texas to surpass 61,000 with 25 additional deaths due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the deaths, the Texas health department reported Saturday.

There are at least 61,006 cases and 1,626 deaths, according to the health department, an increase from 59,776 cases 1,601 deaths reported Friday.

The true numbers are likely higher, however, because many people have not been tested and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

The department also reported 19,312 active cases and that 40,06 have recovered.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
