Texas man killed when family violence call ends in shootout
RIESEL, Texas (AP) — Police killed a Central Texas man early Friday when a family violence report ended in a five-hour standoff with deputies and a shootout.
William Earl Lane, 46, was shot dead around daybreak Friday after exchanging gunshots with sheriff’s deputies and troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety, said Maj. Ricky Armstrong, spokesman for the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office.
The episode began shortly before midnight Thursday with a report of a domestic disturbance at Lane’s home just outside Riesel, a town of about 1,000 residents 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) southeast of Waco.
Deputies found Lane in a field behind the house. After a standoff where Lane opened fire on police twice, officers responded with deadly gunfire around 5:30 a.m. Friday, Armstrong said. No other injuries were reported.
Riesel Police Chief Danny Krumnow said Lane was well-known to officers for involvement in frequent disturbances and reports of weapons at his home.
