A Pharr woman is speaking out after testing positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated and getting a booster shot.

Despite her situation, Mayela Gonzalez is urging people to get vaccinated.

Gonzalez said she started to feel sick the day before she got her Moderna booster shot. She says she may have gotten sick by a coworker.

"I was thinking I was going to die, but at the same time I was praying to God that this will pass," Gonzalez said. “I started feeling like a sore throat and weakness. It was like a lot of body aches.”

Gonzalez said she was surprised when she tested positive for COVID-19.

“This still happened to me…There's other people that I see around, especially in my work place, that don't use their masks,” Gonzalez said. “Because probably they are already vaccinated, and they feel that it's OK, but it's not." 

Cameron County Health Authority Dr. James Castillo said he’s been seeing more breakthrough cases of people testing positive even though they've been vaccinated.

“Even if you've been fully vaccinated and if you've been boosted, what you have to know is that this virus is spreading very quickly through our community,” Dr. Castillo said. “Faster than we expected to."
