WESLACO – President Trump announced a tentative deal to restructure a trade deal, which could eliminate the North American Free Trade Agreement, also known as NAFTA.

Congress still needs to approve the deal in order for it to be finalized.

KRGV’s Valerie Gonzalez spoke with the president and CEO of McAllen Chamber of Commerce, Steve Ahlenius, about what this could mean for the Rio Grande Valley.

He believes the new deal could be beneficial economically.

“For our region, I think the big thing is if you see that increase in the wages, that means that there's going to be Mexican nationals that have more money to spend,” says Ahlenius.

Canada will begin negotiations on Tuesday. If they don’t move forward, the deal will continue between the U.S. and Mexico.
