WESLACO – During a conference in San Antonio Wednesday, President Trump spoke about the immigrant deaths in Brooks County.

He said he had no idea that was occurring.

"I can understand that they're not saying it, they've been saying we need a wall, we need a wall badly, they have told me many other things but they haven't this is a group of people,” he explains.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS has continuously covered this issue over the years.

In an interview conducted last year, Brooks County Sheriff Benny Martinez explained the efforts his deputies are making.

"We've been recovering bodies since 09 until now. That's unusual when you get all five in a proximity versus one... We've had issues, we will find them down the same trail but maybe about a half a mile for another person,” says Martinez.

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas reached out to Martinez for an update and will be speaking with him on this topic again soon.
