WESLACO – Cameron County clerk says the upcoming census will be unlike any others in the past.

The Cameron County clerk, Sylvia Garza Perez says the federal government has decided to digitalize the census.

She says that data helps ensure each county receives the federal funds they need.

"We're able to obtain money for our freeways, roads, for schools, for education, for food funding,” says Perez.

KRGV’s Trason Bragg spoke with a woman who is in the U.S. without documentation.

She says 2020 will be the first year she has the opportunity to contribute to the census and isn't very comfortable filling out government forms.

She says it's a risk she says she'll face if her answers can provide a better quality of life for her children.

The census is set to begin March 23, 2020.

Perez says the only way the County can ensure everyone is counted is with the community's help.

She says if you want to help you can call the Cameron county judge's office at 956-544-0830.
