MCALLEN – The shooting at a Florida high school caused one Rio Grande Valley school to take extra precautions.

The South Texas Christian Academy consists of kindergarten, middle and high schools.

Each student’s size shoes are different, but all take the same steps in an active shooter situation.

The school’s intercom yells, “Code blue, code blue!"

It’s the first signal an emergency is underway.

“In the case of an active shooter situation,” said South Texas Christian Academy Principal Eric Enright.

Enright showed CHANNEL 5 NEWS their safety drill.

After the code blue, teachers lock the door, turn off the lights and tell students to go into a corner and stay hidden.

“Then we would come over here and hide until the situation was resolved either through an announcement over the intercom or a police presence,” said Enright.

The campuses have security cameras in and out of the classrooms. Teachers need to punch in a code to get inside or a camera is there for extra caution.

The Florida shooter who killed 17 students and teachers made Enright realize the practice and measures may not be enough for his school.

"But on our campus, it's a split campus so one half is well prepared and the other half has no fence and yes our students have to cross from one side of the campus to the crossing of a public road,” said Enright.

Enright said they may be a small school with only about 240 students.

He points out it doesn't matter. An unfortunate event can happen anywhere at any time.

Enright explained they are considering adding infrastructure and security guards.
