WESLACO – After relying on several underclassmen to step up towards the end of the regular season, the Wildcats got a boost for the playoffs with the return of senior J.C. Vargas.

“Bears in the first round, he score two touchdowns,” said Weslaco East head coach Mike Burget. “Last week he scored two touchdowns. I really appreciate him coming back and playing hard. He loves his team. He’s going to continue to play hard. Having him back makes it easier calling the offensive plays.”

The senior is like a Swiss Army knife for the Wildcats. He lines up at several positions, with most of his damage done at wide receiver.

“Rich (LeFevre) put the team on his back and led them to the playoffs,” said Vargas. “It feels good to be back and hopefully we can keep it going.”

That will be a tough task. Next up for Weslaco East is a rematch with Cibolo Steele. The Knights shutout East 56-0 in last year’s third round meeting.

“What I learned is never back down from anybody,” said junior linebacker Freddy Cardenas. “Every game you have a chance to win. Different strengths, you just have to adjust to that.”

“Their smallest offensive lineman is my biggest offensive lineman,” said Burget. “We plan on showing up. We plan on giving a Weslaco East effort. We’re going to hit them. You know that football don’t always bounce the way it’s supposed to.”

Friday night’s game at the Alamodome kicks off at 7:30 pm. CHANNEL 5 SPORTS will have highlights as part of our First & Goal coverage.
