EDINBURG – When Todd Lowery was hired to take over UTRGV volleyball, he brought a few transfers with him from UT-Brownsville. One of them was Bojana Mitrovic. Since arriving on campus in Edinburg, she’s led the Vaqueros into uncharted waters.

When Mitrovic started with UTRGV, the volleyball team had not finished over .500 since 2003. Two years later, they were WAC champions, earning a spot in the NCAA tournament.

“We started from zero and we really came a long way,” said Mitrovic.

The senior from Serbia continues to climb the Vaquero record books. She recently passed 1,000 kills in her career. That puts her in the top eight all-time in the program. Beyond the numbers, Mitrovic has become the team’s floor general.

“She does bring so much energy to the court,” said head coach Todd Lowery. “Everybody feels it. So she’s doing a good job of when it’s not her night, to control the emotion and to give to the group emotionally.”

“I think I’ve changed a lot, “ said Mitrovic. “Coach gave me a lot of confidence. He taught me a lot of stuff of how to believe in myself and how to believe in my teammates and how to help them get better.”

Years ago, Coach Lowery gave Mitrovic a chance to play at the next level first in Brownsville. Her journey from overseas to the Valley has taken her on an adventure, in which she’s making life-long memories along the way.

“Can not be more proud of how long this program game and what we’ve accomplished throughout this past three years, “ said Mitrovic. “I’m more than excited of what’s coming.”
